Getting to know your students

Updated: Mar 8, 2022

Being in the Integrated education program has been an amazing two years of learning and interaction with different people. I still remember days when every individual in this program was afraid to talk to one another. It is exciting that we have bonded as a group of individuals who aspire to become future teachers. Our Integrated program class's most significant asset is we present curiosity to learn each day. As a class, we have faced challenges, whether waking up at seven am, handing in assignments before midnight, or passing our midterms. Our Integrated Education program shows resiliency and that we are eager to get our degree and become future teachers.

One of the few lessons I have learned about this program is the importance of diversity in the classroom. Teaching our future students the meaning and importance of diversity will encourage them to spread the value of cultural respect in their everyday lives. As aspiring educators, we must influence our students to learn and work with people from different backgrounds and cultures. I aspire to provide instruction through a lens of diversity to help students foster cultural respect and understand the differences between people. To answer the question: Who are my students? My students are the ones that come from different cultural backgrounds with different personalities, different beliefs, and different skills. These are my students.

The most significant experience in my second year is the micro practicum experience. These experiences will prepare me in completing my future placements. I was very blessed to have a diverse classroom. We were diverse in terms of ethnicity and syndromes. A few of my students have down syndrome and attention disorder. I was amazed at how my teacher handled her classroom. She implemented specific seating plans and implemented a reward system for positive reinforcement. Classroom management plays a big part in organizing an environment.

To figure out your students, you need to use classroom management as a guide to understanding the differences between them. From my experiences, you have to be consistent in your performance because each day is different. You must figure out each of your students' personalities, and then you have to try to solve the problem by keeping them engaged and using outside resources such as candies or fun activities to relax their stressed minds. We can use it as a tool in teaching, building relationships, and creating a memorable experience. As teachers, we must remember that we have a big part in a child's life. We must show care inside and outside of the classroom.
